Aamulehti published an article on January 15, 2026 regarding a comparison of heating methods for a detached house https://www.aamulehti.fi/omaraha/art-2000011735640.html. This comparison was made by calculator for heating methods maintained by Benet Solutions Oy. The analysis shows that the annual costs for heating a detached house are lowest when the house is heated with geothermal heat. The highest annual costs for heating are caused by the use of oil or electricity for heating. Aamulehti has compared the costs of heating methods for a detached house since autumn 2022. The peak price of the energy crisis at that time has come down: the price of electricity and the costs of geothermal heat have decreased. Aamulehti’s indicative calculation was made for a 150 m2 detached house built in the 1980s, where lives four people. The price level data for January 2026 was used for the cost calculations.
The geothermal heat pump uses the solar heat collected in soil, rock or water. The majority of geothermal sites are currently implemented with thermal wells. The heat well keeps its temperature constant, so that its efficiency and power output remains good. As a heating option, geothermal heat is relatively easy to maintain, but the investment costs are higher than for air-to-water heat pumps. Nowadays, the total costs of electric heating are comparable with other forms of heating when an air source heat pump, fireplace or both are included as auxiliary heating. The power fee developed for the transmission of electricity can affect heating choices. The power charge is part of the reform of the Electricity Market Act that entered into force in July 2025, and some electricity network companies already have contracts that take the power charge into account.
